Overview

The Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna are the top survivors in an automotive segment that once had a multitude of minivan choices. They’re both considerably reliable, handsomely styled, and priced in a manner that won’t break the bank, even though they’re outfitted with premium amenities. Drivers looking for the most comfortable high-occupancy vehicle with the most bang for their buck may feel stuck between these two leaders. That’s why we thought we’d help by comparing their merits in the categories that matter most to today’s buyers.

Amenities and Practicality

The 2023 Odyssey and the 2022 Sienna share many noteworthy features (like automatic climate control, power-sliding rear doors, and heated front seats); however, the Odyssey gets a few exclusive features that set it apart from the Sienna. For instance, it’s set up with the versatile Magic Slide second-row seat, which can be moved laterally to allow for easier access to the third row via either side or between the two outboard seats. All three second-row seats also move independently forward and backward as well as having adjustable reclining. The ’22 Sienna, meanwhile, only gets a basic second-row bench seat that lacks this highly convenient sliding function. The ’23 Odyssey can also be ordered with the beneficial CabinWatch system, which displays a view of the second and third rows on the central touchscreen, letting you check on rear passengers without turning around.

Top-Level Trims Compared

Looking to really compare apples to apples, we sized up the models’ highest-priced versions: the Odyssey’s Touring trim level and the Sienna’s Limited. Among the Honda Odyssey’s advantages is a standard rear entertainment system with a 10.2-inch display. Although Toyota offers a rear entertainment system for the Sienna Limited, it’s not standard and will add to the cost. While both models receive keyless entry, the ’23 Odyssey gets a useful auto-locking function for added security if you forget to lock it with the fob. Not only that, but the Odyssey even comes with remote start, a convenience that’s not available on the Sienna. The ’23 Odyssey boasts significantly more cargo space than the ’22 Sienna, too: Honda’s minivan offers as much as 158 cubic feet while the Toyota’s cargo capacity caps at 101 cu. ft.

Performance

The ’23 Odyssey is more robust than the ’22 Sienna in terms of engine output. While both can tow up to 3,500 lb., the Odyssey’s 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 280 horsepower, compared to the Sienna’s 245 hp hybrid powertrain. What’s more, the Odyssey’s engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which most drivers will find lends noticeable ride quality improvement over the Sienna’s continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Safety

The ’23 Odyssey and the ’22 Sienna share many of the same advanced safety features, including forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. When it comes to overall safety, though, the Odyssey has a slight advantage. Although the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given both of these minivans five-star ratings, when it came down to the frontal crash scores the Sienna only received four out of five stars, whereas the Odyssey earned five.
